We are always keen for motivated people to come and work with us. There are several ways to get involved, from studying for a PhD or MSc to academic and postdoctoral job opportunities. We are also in continuous collaboration with industry, NGOs, and academic and public sector partners. We enjoy collaborations with research groups and departments across Queen Mary, including Cognitive Science, Advanced Robotics, Drama, and Intelligent Sensing. We are located in Mile End in East London, with excellent transport links and an active campus.
Study for an MSc in Sound and Music Computing (SMC)
The Centre for Digital Music is strongly involved in developing and running QMUL’s Master of Science in Sound and Music Computing programme. The MSc allows you to become an expert in sound and music computing by developing new tools or products, like audio processors or instruments, and contribute to the expanding music and media technology sector. Prepare for your career by merging your interest in music with technology and align your passion for music with technology through two specialised streams:
- AI and Music Data Science stream, focusing on music distribution and data analytics;
- Audio and Music Engineering stream, dedicated to crafting innovative music hardware and more.
For more information please visit the SMC programme website: https://www.qmul.ac.uk/postgraduate/taught/coursefinder/courses/sound-and-music-computing-msc/
Study for a PhD
PhD funding is available through multiple schemes. These include:
- QM Principal and EPSRC-DTP PhD Studentships (home students, with limited availability to international students; only some C4DM academics might be eligible to supervise through this scheme; usually announced early December)
- S&E Doctoral Research Studentships for Underrepresented Groups (home students only, usually 4 positions funded across the Faculty of Science & Engineering)
- We support international applicants funded by national schemes, e.g., China Scholarship Council, CONACyT (Mexico). More schemes are listed on QMUL's website. Application deadlines may vary across schemes.
- We support home and international applicants funded by The London Arts & Humanities Partnership (LAHP).
- In some occasions we accept self-funded PhD researchers.
- C4DM hosts the UKRI Centre for Doctoral Training in AI and Music (AIM CDT). Currently the AIM CDT welcomes home and international applicants that are self-funded or sponsored through a national scheme (see above).
For PhD enquiries, please drop a line to the most appropriate academic supervisor. In several cases, there is a significant opportunity to jointly shape the direction of research.
For PhD enquiries related to the AIM CDT please send an email to aim-enquiries@qmul.ac.uk.
